Bengaluru Set to Get Second Airport
MB Patil minister for Karnataka Infrastructure and Development has directed officials to prepare a feasibility report for a second commercial airport in the city.
Mr. Patil discussed the importance of the new airport with key department officials in the meeting to support the rapidly growing metropolis.
BC Satish, managing director of Karnataka Industrial Development Corporation, N Manjula, secretary for the Infrastructure Development department, and DP Prakash, Executive Director were present in the meeting.
Need of Second Bengaluru Airport
Mr. Patil said, KempeGowda International Airport is the third busiest airport in India, which handled 3.7 crore passengers and over 4 lakh tonnes of cargo last year.
Given this significant traffic, Patil highlighted the need for a second airport to manage future growth. When Kempe Gowda International Airport was formed, Bangalore International Airport agreed with the government to maintain a 150km radius exclusivity for 25 years, which will expire in 2033.
According to the agreement, only 9 years have left, and planning for a second airport has become crucial.
Bengaluru hosts numerous global companies and the population has surpassed 10 million. Kempe Gowda International Airport also caters to surrounding districts and parts of Andhra Pradesh.
Kempe Gowda International Airport is expected to reach its maximum passenger capacity, with cargo volumes by 2033.

Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce persuaded the government to form a new airport in 2020. They emphasized that the existing airport would reach its full capacity by 2030.
The second airport would enhance connectivity, affordability, and competition while promoting development in the quickly growing southwestern regions of Bangalore along the Bangalore-Mysore highway.
Possible Location of New Airport
The state government is actively considering the Tumakuru-Chitradurga stretch as one of the possible locations, as Times Of India reported last year.
Mr. Patil said Karnataka is in the early stages of recognizing suitable locations for the new airport, influenced by cities like Mumbai and Goa which have multiple airports.
Mr. Patil has earlier emphasized the importance of evaluating air-traffic viability for airports near the proposed second airport in Bangalore.
