A, country with more than 1.4 billion people, India surely needs the biggest airports in the world to travel all over the world.

There are many big airports in India, such as ‘Indira Gandhi International Airport’ or ‘Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport’, which transport millions of people every year.

But now India is building one of the largest airports in the world and the largest in Asia, which will transport ‘225 million’ people after the completion of all phases, which means more than ‘1000 flights’ a day.

Noida International Airport also known as ‘Jewar Airport’, is an upcoming international airport being constructed near Jewar in Gautam Buddha Nagar District.

It will be operated by Yamuna International Airport Private Limited, a subsidiary of ‘Zurich Airport International AG’.

Initially, it will have one runway, with plans to expand into an eight-runway airport over time. also, it will handle ‘12 million passengers per annum, with the potential for growth over ‘30 years.

Once completed, Noida International Airport aims to be India’s and Asia’s largest airport, emphasizing customer service, efficiency, and minimal environmental impact and expected to be ready by ‘September 29, 2024’.

But for what Purpose is this Mega Airport Being Built?

Noida International Airport will serve the National Capital Region and provide an alternative to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.

Noida International Airport aims to be an appealing alternative to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi for several reasons:

In the first stage, Noida International Airport is expected to offer savings of up to ‘18 Dollars’ per flight ticket compared to Indira Gandhi International, making it more budget-friendly for travelers. also, the Uttar Pradesh government has reduced Value Added Tax on aviation fuel, resulting in more competitive airfares at Noida International Airport compared to Delhi.

It is designed for quick, simple, and easy operations, reducing turnaround time for aircraft. It aims to offer higher rotations and lower fuel costs for airlines.

Noida International Airport, spanning an extensive ‘1,334-hectare’ area in Jewar, offers convenient accessibility to Delhi National Capital Region and Western Uttar Pradesh via well-connected road networks.

The new rapid rail corridor connecting Indira Gandhi International Airport and Noida Airport aims to reduce travel time between the two airports to just 80 minutes.

So, Noida International Airport stands as a promising choice for travellers seeking an affordable and convenient air travel experience.

What is its status now and how far has the construction progressed?

According to the project officials, 75% of the work has been completed on the ground and the first runway is nearing completion.

Also, Passenger terminal buildings, Roads, and utilities are under construction. The airport’s ‘Phase 1’ is expected to be completed and opened to the public by ‘March 2024’.

Upon its final phase, Noida International Airport will boast two runways and four passenger terminals, making it the biggest airport in India.

The Jewar Airport is expected to have a maximum passenger capacity of ‘225 million’ once it is fully completed with all five runways and the maintenance, repair, and overhaul facility.

This ambitious project aims to become the largest airport in Asia. However, in its initial phase, Noida International Airport will accommodate 12 million passengers annually.

This Airport is touted as the largest airport in India with an annual passenger capacity of ‘70 million’. It is also known as the biggest airport in Asia, while according to the Airports Council International, seven airports in Asia hosted over 70 million passengers in ‘2019’.

So how is it known as the largest airport in Asia while ‘Beijing International Airport’ or ‘Dubai International Airport’ handles over ‘100 million passengers annually?

It seems a little strange. But, according to the ‘CEO’ of Noida International Airport Limited, ‘Arun Vir Singh’, once the project is complete with all five runways, the total passenger capacity is expected to be 225 million.

This would make it the ‘biggest airport in Asia’ in terms of passenger capacity. So, the unique capacity of the airport makes it the ‘largest airport in Asia’ apart from that, this airport will help India a lot.

And we have to wait to see whether it will perform as expected or not? ‘What do you think’, can Noida International Airport reach its ambitious goals or not?

Bengaluru Set to Get Second Airport

MB Patil minister for Karnataka Infrastructure and Development has directed officials to prepare a feasibility report for a second commercial airport in the city.

Mr. Patil discussed the importance of the new airport with key department officials in the meeting to support the rapidly growing metropolis.

BC Satish, managing director of Karnataka Industrial Development Corporation, N Manjula, secretary for the Infrastructure Development department, and DP Prakash, Executive Director were present in the meeting.

Need of Second Bengaluru Airport

Mr. Patil said, KempeGowda International Airport is the third busiest airport in India, which handled 3.7 crore passengers and over 4 lakh tonnes of cargo last year.

Given this significant traffic, Patil highlighted the need for a second airport to manage future growth. When Kempe Gowda International Airport was formed, Bangalore International Airport agreed with the government to maintain a 150km radius exclusivity for 25 years, which will expire in 2033.

According to the agreement, only 9 years have left, and planning for a second airport has become crucial.

Bengaluru hosts numerous global companies and the population has surpassed 10 million. Kempe Gowda International Airport also caters to surrounding districts and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Kempe Gowda International Airport is expected to reach its maximum passenger capacity, with cargo volumes by 2033.

Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce persuaded the government to form a new airport in 2020. They emphasized that the existing airport would reach its full capacity by 2030.

The second airport would enhance connectivity, affordability, and competition while promoting development in the quickly growing southwestern regions of Bangalore along the Bangalore-Mysore highway.

Possible Location of New Airport

The state government is actively considering the Tumakuru-Chitradurga stretch as one of the possible locations, as Times Of India reported last year.

Mr. Patil said Karnataka is in the early stages of recognizing suitable locations for the new airport, influenced by cities like Mumbai and Goa which have multiple airports.

Mr. Patil has earlier emphasized the importance of evaluating air-traffic viability for airports near the proposed second airport in Bangalore.
