BYD Sealion 7 2025. A direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y

BYD Sealion

We are examining what could potentially be the biggest challenge for the Tesla Model Y.

The 2025 BYD Sealion 7 is an all-electric SUV from the Chinese automaker BYD that has already garnered significant buzz.

Think of it as a fierce competitor not only to the Model Y but also to the Kia EV5, the XPeng G6, the DePole S07, and the Leap Motor C10.

If you’re in the market for a NextGen electric vehicle (EV) family hauler, this is a significant one to watch.

So, what’s the deal with the BYD Sealion 7?

Recent filings in Australia confirm that there will be two powertrain options: a single-motor rear-wheel drive version with 230 kW and an all-wheel drive variant boasting a remarkable 390 kW total—130 kW on the front axle and 230 kW on the rear.

Based on what we’ve observed in Europe, the torque could be approximately 380 Nm for the rear-wheel drive (RWD) and 690 Nm for the all-wheel drive (AWD) models.

That’s enough power to accelerate the AWD model from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds.

The RWD models are no slouch either, claiming a time of 6.7 seconds for the same sprint. Additionally, you have two battery sizes to choose from, both featuring BYD’s renowned LFP blade batteries.

Depending on which option you choose, you can select either the 82.5 kWh battery or the more powerful 91.5 kWh battery.

You can expect a driving range of approximately 456 to 520 kilometers according to the WLTP standard. This range is comparable to Tesla’s figures and should be sufficient for daily commutes as well as weekend road trips, minimizing concerns about range anxiety.

The BYD Sealion 7

The Sealion 7 measures 4,830 mm in length, 1,925 mm in width, and 1,620 mm tall, riding on a wheelbase of 2,930 mm.

It is larger than a Tesla Model Y in every dimension except height, where it is only 4 mm shorter.

Compared to the Kia EV5 or XPeng G6 and XPeng G6, the Sealion 7 still appears longer and wider, providing insight into its interior space.

Price

Now, regarding pricing, full details aren’t official yet, but we can estimate it will be around the AED 55,000 to AUD 60,000 mark, which would more or less match the Model Y and other competitors like the XPeng G6 and Kia EV5.

Since the BYD Seal sedan starts at approximately A$149,888, we suspect the Sealion 7 will not be priced below the A3’s A$44,499.

If you’re in the market for a larger, more premium family electric vehicle (EV), this option will likely be priced slightly higher than entry-level models.

For Australia, the Sealion 7 is expected to be released in the first half of 2025. We will have to wait for official pricing, specifications, and all the details regarding standard features.

However, based on what we have observed so far, the dual motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system, impressive range, and spacious dimensions suggest that this SUV could be a significant disruptor in the electric vehicle (EV) crossover market.

What do you think—could the BYD Sealion 7 truly steal the spotlight from Tesla’s Model Y and the upcoming Kia EV5?
